{"id":17236,"date":"2012-09-30T15:27:44","date_gmt":"2012-09-30T14:27:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.phoenixfm.com\/?p=17236"},"modified":"2012-09-30T15:27:45","modified_gmt":"2012-09-30T14:27:45","slug":"what-to-do-in-the-garden-last-week-of-september","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.phoenixfm.com\/?p=17236","title":{"rendered":"What to do in The Garden &#8211; Last Week of September"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In The Flower Garden<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plant crocuses, fritillaries and dwarf narcissus in lawns<\/li>\n<li>Plant up patio pots for autumn interest<\/li>\n<li>Lift gladioli, clean the corms and store them in a shed or garage<\/li>\n<li>Prune rambling and climbing roses, and shorten long shoots on standard roses<\/li>\n<li>Plant spring bedding, including wallflowers and forget-me-nots, among tulips<\/li>\n<li>Lift, divide and replant congested clumps of perennials<\/li>\n<li>Net holly berries to protect them from hungry birds if you want them for Christmas arrangements<\/li>\n<li>Plant lily bulbs, including fragrant <em>Lilium regale<\/em>, in groups among low shrubs to bloom next summer<\/li>\n<li>Move shrubs that are growing in the wrong places<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In The Fruit and Vegetable Garden<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make a cross-cut in cabbage stems when harvesting to encourage a further crop<\/li>\n<li>Sow broad beans for early crops next May and June<\/li>\n<li>Put cloches over tender herbs like basil and coriander<\/li>\n<li>Pot up mint, chives and parsley to keep on a bright window sill<\/li>\n<li>Sow green manure crops such as field beans and grazing rye<\/li>\n<li>Plant garlic and autumn onion sets<\/li>\n<li>Cover endive to blanch the leaves<\/li>\n<li>Dig up and pot up roots of chicory for winter forcing<\/li>\n<li>Pick apples and pears before the wind blows them down<\/li>\n<li>Finish pruning blackberries and autumn-fruiting raspberries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In The Greenhouse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring aeoniums and other tender succulents under cover for winter<\/li>\n<li>Empty begonia tubers from pots, clean off the compost and store somewhere dark and dry<\/li>\n<li>Water plants more sparingly now conditions are getting cooler<\/li>\n<li>Wash off all shade paint and remove blinds and shade netting<\/li>\n<li>Sow sweet peas for early flowers next summer<\/li>\n<li>Clear out old crops in pots and growing bags, adding them to the compost heap<\/li>\n<li>Bring pots of late-flowering chrysanthemums under cover<\/li>\n<li>Line the inside of your greenhouse with bubble polythene<\/li>\n<li>Check heaters are working efficiently<\/li>\n<li>Water potted azaleas with rainwater, keeping the compost constantly moist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Around The Garden <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a fork or hollow-tined aerator to spike your lawn and improve drainage<\/li>\n<li>Dig up and pot up tender perennials to bring indoors for winter protection<\/li>\n<li>Raise the cutting height when mowing the lawn<\/li>\n<li>Apply an autumn lawn food<\/li>\n<li>Cover ponds with netting to stop leaves falling in<\/li>\n<li>Remove pumps and filters from ponds and water features<\/li>\n<li>Empty ceramic and glazed pots to store under cover for winter<\/li>\n<li>Collect fallen leaves smothering alpines and other plants<\/li>\n<li>Order roses, hedging and fruit trees for winter planting<\/li>\n<li>Retrieve plant supports from flower beds, clean and store away<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Happy Gardening.
