colour<\/li>\n<li>After first frosts,\u00a0lift and store dahlia tubers or leave in the ground but mulch heavily<\/li>\n<li>Plant evergreen shrubs and conifers, including new hedges<\/li>\n<li>Lift tender cannas to avoid frost damage, and overwinter tubers in cool dark conditions<\/li>\n<li>Plant out spring bedding<\/li>\n<li>Sow hardy annuals in cleared areas for early flowers next summer<\/li>\n<li>Sow sweet peas in pots, and overwinter under cover<\/li>\n<li>Prune back standard roses to help prevent wind rock damaging the plants<\/li>\n<li>Take hardwood cuttings from cornus, ribes, salix and roses<\/li>\n<li>Plant up tubs and baskets with evergreens for autumn and winter interest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fruit and Vegetable Garden<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pick ripe apples and pears<\/li>\n<li>Finish harvesting marrows, squashes, onions and potatoes<\/li>\n<li>Sow broad beans and hardy peas<\/li>\n<li>Plant out garlic cloves<\/li>\n<li>Earth up leeks to cover and blanch their stems<\/li>\n<li>Cut away fruited blackberry canes at soil level and tie in new ones<\/li>\n<li>Plant new fruit trees and bushes<\/li>\n<li>Tidy strawberry beds, cutting back old foliage and congested runners and removing weeds<\/li>\n<li>Pot up a few roots of mint and bring under cover for winter pickings<\/li>\n<li>Improve soil, digging over bare ground and forking in bulky, well-rotted manure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In The Greenhouse<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wash greenhouse glazing to let in maximum light<\/li>\n<li>Bring potted cordylines under cover for winter<\/li>\n<li>Insulate your greenhouse with bubble polythene<\/li>\n<li>Maintain plant hygiene, picking off faded blooms and dead leaves from all plants<\/li>\n<li>Water plants more sparingly now conditions are turning cooler<\/li>\n<li>Check heaters are working properly<\/li>\n<li>Use an electric propagator to encourage rooting on late cuttings<\/li>\n<li>Plant hyacinths and daffodils for indoor displays<\/li>\n<li>Keep good air circulation around potted chrysanthemums to avoid mildew<\/li>\n<li>Lift chicory roots, cut the tops off and pot them up, then place in the dark to blanch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Around The Garden<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collect and compost autumn leaves<\/li>\n<li>Cut back suckers growing around the base of trees<\/li>\n<li>Visit garden centres to choose bulbs and bedding for spring displays<\/li>\n<li>Mow lawns less frequently now grass growth is slowing down<\/li>\n<li>Complete new lawn laying projects during autumn<\/li>\n<li>Improve soil in borders in preparation for autumn planting, digging it over and adding compost<\/li>\n<li>Remove and clean pumps from ponds<\/li>\n<li>Take hardwood cuttings from shrubs and fruit bushes<\/li>\n<li>Spike lawns and brush sharp sand or grit into the holes to improve
